National Careers Week and National Apprentice Week

Collage of the apprentices at CHP National Careers Week and National Apprentice Week go hand-in-hand this week. Here, we look at the opportunities CHP offers and some of the success stories.

Charlie Knight, Stock Condition Surveyor, first joined us as a student in 2017. He spent time researching information for his master’s degree in Property and Facilities Management and, whilst here, developed an interest in social housing. Two months after graduating from university, Charlie joined us as a Housing Options Assistant. Keen to progress his career, he was given the opportunity to work with the Surveying team and learn more about the job. In December he was successful in his application for his current position. “I believe that everything happens for a reason. The interview that I had for the Housing Options role was great practice and after receiving some positive feedback, it gave me extra confidence to apply for the position of Stock Condition Surveyor.” said Charlie.

CHP also regularly offers work placements to students allowing them to experience the work environment. Oliver Themistocleous has been working with our IS team since January and will stay with CHP until the summer. Oliver said: “I’m gaining valuable, transferable experience for my CV.”

CHP have an incredibly successful apprenticeship programme with over 21 apprentices through its doors in the last 10 years; nine currently in employment. Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to learn whilst earning a competitive salary and apprentices have worked across the Commercial Services and Housing teams.

Ashley Taylor, housing apprentice, worked in a school before joining CHP. “I realised that there was no opportunity to progress my career, so I wanted a change. I had no experience in anything else so thought an apprenticeship would be a good opportunity to learn.” Ashley has enjoyed her experience and said: “Apprenticeships benefit not only the person, but also the employer. I’ve learnt a lot, and I’d like to think that the teams I have worked with have learnt something too.”
