Spring clean maintenance and repair checks following a cold winter.

Gavin Page With the first daffodils showing and the days lengthening, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to spend time on home maintenance this spring. However, a few checks can potentially save you a lot of hassle. With that in mind, Gavin Page who is a manager at CHP with over thirty years of experience within a maintenance role talks about some of the most important things to keep on top of around your home this spring.

Air the house out

During the winter months, it’s all any of us can do to keep the warm air inside our homes and the freezing cold air out. This can have an unfortunate consequence, especially after a few months have gone by. With a lack of fresh air being circulated around the home, it can begin to feel a bit stale and musty.

To try and overcome this, on a warm, dry and sunny day (if there’s a slight breeze, then even better) open up all the windows in your home. This will help get rid of the old, stuffy air and instead give your house a nice, renewed freshness for spring. Just remember to close your windows when you go out to keep your home secure.

Check around the home for damp patches and black mould

Not only can a lack of ventilation lead to staleness, but it can also provide ideal conditions for damp spots, particularly condensation damp. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, we’re doing more to keep our homes warm and so this will lead to more condensation, generally.

Secondly, the colder temperatures outside lead to our home’s walls and other surfaces also being colder. This provides surfaces below the air’s ‘dew point’ and so condensation forms. Hopefully, you won’t notice anything too drastic (if at all). Test your smoke alarms 

Although this isn’t something specifically for the spring season, testing your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector weekly is an essential habit to get into to keep you and your family safe. Usually, you’ll need to change the alarm’s battery once a year (unless it’s mains-powered or a special 10-year battery) and you should also look to vacuum your alarms case using the soft brush attachment to remove dust from the smoke alarm sensors at least  once a  month.

Touching up parts of the home

After harsh winter weather conditions, the outsides of homes can sometimes look a little worse for wear. Some of your outdoor space may have become a little unruly if left untamed for a few months. Spring offers the perfect opportunity to get out in the garden, cut the grass and trim back any trees and bushes to keep the frontage of your property looking fresh and tidy. To chime in with the freshness of spring, you might also find yourself wanting to redecorate your windows or your door slightly. It’s important to remember that any alterations like this will need to be approved by us before you go ahead.
