16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
This annual international campaign starts on 25 November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It ends on 10 December, which is Human Rights Day.
Violence against women and girls is the most common human rights violation in the world. It happens every day, in every country, and in all areas of society.
Facts about gender-based violence
-
Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023.
-
60% of these homicides were committed by an intimate partner or family member.
-
140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative – that's one every ten minutes.
-
In the UK, disabled women are more than twice as likely to experience domestic violence than non-disabled women.
-
Black women experiencing domestic abuse are 14% less likely to be referred for specialist support by police than white women (they’re also 3% more likely to report the abuse).
What you can do to help
If you see a woman being harassed, you can help by doing the following.
-
If it’s safe to do so, stop and offer your help to the person experiencing harassment. If it’s not safe, call 999.
-
Ask the person what would make them feel safe and then support them to access this.
-
Offer to help the person report the incident – but only if they feel comfortable doing so.
Domestic abuse
One of the leading causes of homelessness is domestic abuse. If you’re experiencing domestic abuse, or are concerned about someone else, please get in touch. Our team are understanding, non-judgemental, and will be sensitive to your situation.
Last year, we had 157 reported cases of domestic abuse and, with their permission, referred people to specialist support agencies so they could get the help they needed.
If you’d prefer to speak to an employee who is the same sex as you, please let us know. You can call 0300 555 0500 (Text relay: 18001 0300 555 0500) or email mb-tenancysustainment@chp.org.uk. If you're in immediate danger, please call 999.
