5 ways to reset your space for 2024

If you haven’t done a New Year declutter, you’re not alone. Amidst the busyness of the festive season and then returning to normal routines, you might still have a few cupboards that need tackling to feel organised for the year ahead.

You might also be someone who struggles to get motivated to tidy up and declutter, and then the task becomes too overwhelming. We’ve got a few tips to help you take on the task for 2024.

  1. Choose which room you’re going to tackle first. Once you’ve decided, see what needs to be done. Is it just a case of putting your washing away, or do you need to make a trip to the charity shop?
  2. Grab a bin bag and get rid of all the rubbish. Having rubbish or recycling lying around can make the task look worse than it is, and clearing this away makes a big difference.
  3. Tackle each area one at a time. For instance, the corner with piles of stuff in it is likely going to need a lot of your attention, but your bedside table might just need a quick dust. If you struggle to stay focused, give yourself 10, 15 or 30 minutes to sort each section. Set a timer on your phone or watch to stay on track.
  4. Whilst you’re focusing on each area, think about whether you really need that thing that you’ve not used for a year. Could you sell it or donate it?
  5. Once you cleared and tidied up the space, it’s time to clean. Grab the vacumn cleaner and duster to complete the task and finish off the freshen up.

If you discover damp or mould whilst you’re cleaning, let us know as soon as possible and we’ll send someone round to take a look. You can report it by calling 0300 555 0500 or emailing reportdampandmould@chp.org.uk.

You might also have some larger household items that you want to get rid of or need to replace. Our Looking after your home webpage has information around how to do this, as well as other details on home safety.
