Celebrating our 4,000 new affordable home

We’re celebrating the delivery of 106 new affordable homes at the Chelmer Waterside development in Chelmsford. The delivery of these homes means that we have now provided 4,000 new properties since starting our development programme in 2006.

We worked with developer Taylor Wimpey to provide 106 affordable homes at Chelmer Waterside – 69 for affordable rent and 37 for shared ownership.

The final properties to be handed over are a block of 60 affordable rent apartments a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes. We have worked with Chelmsford City Council to allocate people to live in the affordable rent properties.

The Chelmer Waterside development is located in the heart of Chelmsford, looking out over the River Chelmer. The site has received a Seal of Excellence from the National House Building Council (NHBC). In addition, Site Manager Ryan Dunn, from housebuilders Taylor Wimpey, has received an NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award.

Our ambitious development programme has now seen us deliver 4,000 new affordable homes across the eastern region. We have provided homes in 13 of the 14 local authority areas in Essex, as well as in Babergh in Mid Suffolk.

We work with a range of partners, contractors and developers to provide much-needed homes for social and affordable rent.  It’s also helped hundreds of people take a first step on the property ladder by delivering almost 1,000 homes for shared ownership.

Carl Hockey, Growth and Partnerships Director said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to deliver over 100 high specification affordable apartments at Chelmer Waterside, working in partnership with Taylor Wimpey. This is a fantastic development, so it’s very fitting that this also marks the handover of our 4,000th new home.

“We’re very proud to reach this milestone, as it shows we’re delivering on our commitment to transform lives by providing great affordable homes. However, we know there is more work to do, and we remain focused on meeting housing need in our region. We’ve set another ambitious target of providing another 1,500 new affordable homes by 2025 and look forward to delivering on this.”
