Free things to do with kids this May half-term

Here are some fun, free (and low-cost) activities to do with your children over May half-term. From community events to summer fairsthere’s lots going on.  

 

Graffiti Wall Guided Walk and Workshop 

  • Sunday 24 May, 10am-3pm  

  • Purfleet Train Station, RM19 1PL 

Discover Thurrock’s hidden graffiti gallery of vibrant murals on this riverside walk from Purfleet to West Thurrock. At the seawall, you can add your own artistic mark. This five-mile walk will take around five hours, including stops and the workshop. 

 

Danbury Summer Fete 

  • Saturday 30 May, 12-5pm 

  • Danbury Leisure Centre, CM3 4NQ 

Enjoy an afternoon of fun, food, and games at the Danbury Summer Fete, an annual village tradition 

 

Heart & Soul Saturday  

  • Saturday 30 May, 11am-3pm 

  • New London Road, Chelmsford, CM2 0AW 

There will be a free warm lunch, live music, giant games for all ages, creative activities such as a community mural, and more at this relaxed eventEntry is free, but you’ll need to book your place. 

 

The Little Loves Summer Fayre 

  • Sunday 31 May, 11am-3pm 

  • The Mill Arts and Events Centre, Rayleigh 

There will be market stalls for adults and children, along with on-site refreshments, and free parking. 

 

Eastwood Summer Fayre 

  • Sunday 31 May, 11am-3pm 

  • Ekco Social Club, Thornford Gardens, Southend, SS2 6PU 

Live music and over 30 local sellers, including food and crafts. Free admission and fun for all the family. 

 

Essex Fire Museum open day 

  • Tuesday 26 May and Sunday 31 May, 10.30am-4pm 

  • Essex Fire Museum, Grays, RM17 5QS 

Essex Fire Museum is opening its doors to the public so families can get involved in history trails around the museum, do arts and crafts, sit on the fire engines, and more. Entry is free, but you'll need to book your place. 

 

Essex Police Museum 

  • Wednesday 27 May, 10am-4pm 

  • Essex Police Museum, Essex Police Headquarters, Springfield, CM2 6DN 

With over 25,000 historical artefacts in the collection, Essex Police Museum tells the story of the local service from the Victorian era to today. It’s usually open to the public on Saturdays, and during the school holidays it’s also open on Wednesdays, 10am-4pm.   

 

Go for a cheap meal 

Lots of restaurants run offers where kids can eat for free or for £1 when an adult buys a meal. Many of these are year-round, but there’s usually a few more to take advantage of during the school holidays. Take a look at this round up of everything on offer on Money Saving Expert’s website. 

 

Essex ActivAte half-term clubs  

Local providers are offering free spaces at the half-term clubs to eligible children. See what’s on near you and contact your local club directly to secure a free space. 

 

SEND Fest (paid entry) 

  • Saturday 30 May, 6-9pm 

  • Colchester Zoo 

  • Tickets: from £10 per person 

This event is exclusively for children and young people with SEND and their families. Discover over 150 species from around the world, set in over 50 acres of parkland and lakes.
