Get connected: easy ways to meet people in your area

alt=

There are lots of great ways to meet new people and connect with others in your local area. Whether it’s through events, community groups, clubs, classes, or volunteering, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and try something new. Knowing where to start can feel overwhelming, so we’ve pulled together a few ideas to help get you started.

The Ideas Hub

This community space in Meadows Shopping Centre, Chelmsford, is managed and run by 30 volunteers from diverse cultures and backgrounds. They offer activities designed to bring local people together, reducing loneliness, and supporting mental wellbeing. These include a befriending café and arts and crafts sessions. They also offer an advice and support service, helping people with legal issues and referring them to other agencies when necessary. Find out what's on.

Active Essex

Another great way to meet people and be part of something, while improving your mental and physical health, is exploring the opportunities available through Active Essex. They have a helpful activity finder where you can put in your location and find activities near you.

ACL

Have you considered an adult learning course? ACL provides a wide range of courses. Pick up a new hobby, develop a skill, access resources for your wellbeing, or even earn a qualification whilst meeting new people. There are lots of courses to choose from.

Volunteer Essex

Volunteering is a good way to meet people and build connections through shared activity. Working alongside other volunteers and staff gives you the chance to form relationships naturally, while also connecting with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Search for opportunities near you.

Orchards Café

This is a community café located on Mascalls Way in Great Baddow and has a small soft-play area for children. On the first Monday of every month, members of the CHP team are there alongside the Community Police and local councillors to have a chat and offer free advice and support.

Parkside Community Hub

The Hub is a friendly, welcoming space for customers and the wider community on Melbourne Avenue in Chelmsford. It’s a great place to connect with others, learn new skills, and enjoy activities such as crafts and gardening. The Hub is also a warm space, so you can drop in for a hot drink and a chat. It’s open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am to 4pm. Find out more in this guide.
